Festivus for the Rest of US

There’s been a lot in the news about Festivus. Recently an atheist group erected a Festivus pole of beer cans in the Florida state capitol. This is an abomination against Festivus. The purpose of Festivus is to protest the commercialism of December, not to fight against Christians. I’m a Catholic and fully believe in celebrating the birth of Jesus. What I don’t believe in the all-out spending like a drunken sailor just to get Christmas gifts and businesses doing all they can to separate you from your money (Opening on Thanksgiving anyone?).

George, Festivus is your heritage!

This is really missing the whole point of Festivus; it doesn’t have a point. It’s not about rubbing someone’s else beliefs in their face. It’s about nothing. It’s celebrating a season without the commercialism that currently has taken over the Christmas season. Remember the whole point of the holiday stemmed from Frank Constanza and a fight over a doll.

Frank Costanza: Many Christmases ago, I went to buy a doll for my son. I reached for the last one they had, but so did another man. As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way.
Cosmo Kramer: What happened to the doll?
Frank Costanza: It was destroyed. But out of that a new holiday was born … a Festivus for the rest of us!
Cosmo Kramer: That must have been some kind of doll.
Frank Costanza: She was.

More than ever the spirit of Festivus must strive.
