Shepherd Pie

Shepherd's Pie
Serves 4
Not the traditional Shepherd's pie (that's served with lamb) but still a great recipe for those who want some British comfort food.

  10. 1 package of brown gravy mix
  11. 1 cup water
  12. 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  13. 1 tablespoon ketchup
  14. salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
  1. Add Worcestershire sauce to ground beef before cooking. Let stand for 15 minutes to marinate.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add potatoes and cook until tender but still firm, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash.
  3. Mix in butter, finely chopped onion and 1/4 cup shredded cheese.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste; set aside.
  5. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add carrots and cook until tender but still firm, about 15 minutes. Drain, mash and set aside.
  6. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C.)
  7. Heat oil in a large frying pan. Add onion and cook until clear. Add ground beef and cook until well browned. Pour off excess fat, then stir in flour and cook 1 minute. Add ketchup, gravy mix and water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
  8. Spread the ground beef in an even layer on the bottom of a 2 quart casserole dish.
  9. Next, spread a layer of mashed carrots. Top with the mashed potato mixture and sprinkle with remaining shredded cheese.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
Notes
  1. Let sit for a couple minutes before serving.
